An Grianghraf Gafa – Pictures and Proverbs

Author: Jim Herron

An Grianghraif Gafa - Pictures and Proverbs by Jim Herron

This high quality book (111 pages, hard back, in full colour) was produced by Forbairt Feirste with generous support from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and launched in Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich in Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter on Lá Fhéile Bríde, 2014.

Forbairt Feirste took the production forward as an indicator of the cultural distinctiveness of the Gaeltacht Quarter and other Irish speaking communities and also as a celebration of a new generation of cultural entrepreneurs who are using Irish and bilingual signage as key marketing tools and economic drivers.

This inspirational book brings together modern Irish language signs and ancient proverbs in a way which allows the reader to enjoy and gain benefit not only from the images and associated text but also from the richness of the proverbs to which they are linked.

As An Seabhac said in his preface to Seanfhocail na Muimhneach, proverbs contain the true spirit of our language, they contain the sound and beauty and tidiness of Irish and they contain the philosophy and the character of our Irish ancestors.

An Grianghraf Gafa’s bilingual approach will appeal to all those who have an interest in Irish or in proverbs as well as to those already proficient in the language. You will be intrigued by this publication and inspired to breathe new life into the proverbs by incorporating them into your everyday conversations.
